Global Warming (problems & solutions)... TASK 7

One of the biggest problems facing our earth is global warming. Many scientists believe the average temperature is rising and this has bad effects. In general, according to Anup Shuh global warming happened because of the rise in “greenhouse gases” like CO2 and methane (Anup Shuh,2009). In this task I’m going to highlight some problems then I’m going to outline my possible solutions of the global warming.

One of the biggest problems is caused because global warming is melting ice on the north. This will increase the sea level; it could also affect the millions of people and animals who live near the coast also there are many buildings there (Novi Meadows Elementary, 2002). Another result of global warming is the quality of life will decrease. This could affect the economy and it might affect our health. However, we will need another world to live in if no one tried to solve these problems.

Turning to the solutions, the first solution is to decrease using cars in our daily routine. This will decrease the emissions like Carbon Dioxide so we will have a better environment. Another way in which we can reduce global warming is to reduce using oil and try to find another resource of energy like the sun. Using this solution could reduce global warming. A third means is lowering cars’ emissions. This could save the environment. My last solution is to make the green fuel cheaper than fossil fuel. That surely will push the people to save the environment.

In conclusion, “The scientists believe that we are causing global warming”(Al Gore,2006) . Although global warming looks like no one can stop it in fact there are several solutions. Finally, the government should reduce the global warming as much as they can and also educate people on what they can do.

Summary 1

PART 1( Summary):
In this article the writer discuss as algal biofuels. He said the government is close to finishing a project which could transform fuels. The Carbon Trust will make it actually by 2020 and this company wants to decrease the emissions in 2050 by 80%. In addition, algae could produce biofuels. Scientists try to get strains that could be a substitute for diesel and petrol.
Moreover, algae haven’t any manufacturing cost; also they grow in any area and do not need fresh or clean water. Firstly Carbon Trust promises the algae will replace about 70 billion of fossil fuels yearly in the world. Algae have many species so we can’t trust two companies.
In the second stage the algae farm will produce more biofuel than we want and it will cost too much. In fact, until now nobody could design a market system but Carbon Trust feels there will be a market system because of increased oil prices and climate change.
Many companies are making algae fuel and one of them tries to get “green crude”; it’s a chemical mixture. This company wants to use it in cars. Moreover the algae could remove CO2 and we could use it to clean the atmosphere.

PART 2 ( Main Idea):
The Carbon Trust finds a project which could produce fuels from algae. Then algae have many good points like lowering the carbon emissions and removing CO2. This project will cost too much if you compare it with the oil price; because of increased oil price and climate change the algae fuel could be available to the public.

PART 3 ( Comment):

What do you think ?
I think this article is very important because it outlines what we will use after oil or to save the climate.
In my opinion:
I see this article is well organized but has many difficult words.

What more do you know or want to learn about this topic?
This article made me remember what I read last week in Al-Khaleej news paper, they said the government will use taxi which has no emissions in 2012. In addition, I want to learn more what the government will do about the climate change or after the oil finish.

Reading summary 2

Reading summary2

In this article the writer wrote about Turning Torso. It’s a building that has flats mass around a helical high-rise. It includes every kind of entertainment, like stylish furniture and children’s playthings. The residents are not just human, also the birds and animals have a place to live in Turning Torso.

It has 1300 newly occupied flats of the first facet ( Bo01). In addition, it’s providing a sustainable lifestyle and renewable power.
Bat boxes covered 1metre sq for each 5metre sq. Moreover, 8 bat kind, several kind of fish and nine types of seabird moved to the Western Harbour.
The next levels of the project are Bo02 and Bo03. It’s an advanced kind of Bo01 with more policy.

The planners hope the children will be more educated about the earth.
The western Harbour is a big green building plan or maybe the biggest.

Count words: 146

Main Idea ( part 2)

Torso building is a environmental project covering the humans, animals and birds. The first facet of the project is called Bo01 and it included many rules that help to save the earth. The developers took the lesson from the first facet to build the Bo02 and Bo03.The Harbour project is nowadays being viewed as the opening step.

Part 3

What do you think?

I think this article is very important because it’s highlighted some solutions to save our earth. Overall, this article is well organized but has some difficult words.

What more do you know or want to learn about this topic?

I know this kind of project could save the environment and I want to learn more about these buildings and did they use green material to build it.

Cool city

In week 14 I watched some videos about the cool cities.
I understood from the videos, when the industrial revolution started some problems started with it such as carbon dioxide emissions,which increase the temperature and sea level and this is climate change.

These problems are become worse & more dangerous. If no one tries to stop them we will need another earth to live in. Of course it’s impossible to have another earth; this is the only earth that God gave us.

To keep our earth safe we must to reduce the emissions by 50%.

In the last 30 years Japan worked hard and this country doubled their GDP (100% increase), increased the energy efficiency by 37% and decreased the oil consumption by 8%.

Building and transport are the main reasons for 90% of the emissions that the earth faces.
SDCJ is a group of Japanese companies that are working to build cool city. It’s an environmentally friendly green city with no carbon dioxide emissions.

The main zones in this city are:

* Business
* Commercial/cultural
* Residential

In addition, cool city provides three types of transportation and they are:
Hybrid cars
Monorail/Light rail
Solar water taxis

Cool city has some solutions to reduce the heat with zero CO2 emissions by:
Planting trees
Water ways
Roof membranes

The scientists expectto reduce the CO2 emissions by 30% for eco-residences & by 50% for eco towers. Totally, they expected to ruduce 60% of CO2 emissions.
In my view I think living in this way of lifestyle is impossible nowadays. I hope in next 15 years everybody will live in cool cities. It will be good for us and for our earth .

Reading Summary 3

PART 1:

In this article the writer discussed the global warming in Europe specifically and other countries; he said the EU reached an important agreement to reduce the emissions such as carbon dioxide by 20% by 2020 to achieve the 1990 level by using the renewable resources like air, biofuels, tidal power and water. In addition, some countries like France will use the nuclear power instead of oil and gas. Moreover they will work to put ‘storage technology and carbon capture’ in the power stations after 2010; also the EU will set new carbon emission limits and work to use more biofuel.

But the European renewable energy companies have problems with money when the other companies can use the fossil fuels without punishment. However, everybody has to know that the climate change is a fact and we have to work to stop it now.

Overall, Britain can reduce 60% of the emissions by 2050. Globally, the other countries decided to follow the EU countries when the EU wants to reduce by more than 10%.The writer’s opinion is that in last 10 years Europe had busy work but in the next years they have to work even harder for the climate change.

Words count: 199

PART 2:

· EU worked to reduce the emissions.
· European companies have a problem with money in contrast to the other companies
· The writer hopes other countries will decide to follow the European countries

PART 3:

I believe that the climate change is very dangerous and we must reduce the emissions right now. I think this article is an old one because nowadays most of the counties worked to reduce their emissions. In addition even if the renewable energy costs more there are some countries that are using it and the society and the climate have benefited but the question is when we will see all the countries using it widely.

TASK 5: Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint means how much I effect the atmosphere as an individual. In addition, today I counted my individual carbon footprint and it was 2.82 at http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/. In fact, my footprint is much less than my class average which is 3.778 and I think it is the lowest in the class

There are three main factors or reasons that made me reach this much footprint. There are:
I. Travel
II. Stuff
III. Home

However, our college, companies and countries all of them have a footprint which affects the atmosphere. In addition, while my class footprint average is 3.778, the United Arab Emirates has the highest footprint in the whole world.

I can reduce my footprint by:

Cancelling the not important trips, trying to drive slowly and even walk to go to the nearby places such as the mosque and the supermarket. I’m going to concentrate on travel because it was the highest reason that raised my footprint. However, the other reasons did not effect me too much so I’m going to work on my travel footprint only.
